Binder Ring Journal

Today we are keeping it really simple with a journal project. It will take about 20 minutes to make one notebook. But you could batch the different tasks and make more without adding a lot of time. That makes this perfect for co-worker gifts, stocking stuffers, and more.

To get started you will need a few supplies:
3 binder clips
2 pieces of paper for covers (could be patterned or decorated later)
2 pieces of thin cardboard (I used a cereal box for mine)
A stack of paper for the inside (I used cardstock, but feel free to use copy paper, patterned paper, or whatever you think your recipient will like)
Strong white glue
Ruler
Scissors or paper trimmer

Disclaimer: The first few steps are a bit technical with measurements. You can chose to use the same measurements I used and take out the guess work. But if you are up for the challenge, you can make a custom size. The finished dimensions of my journal are about 4 3/8 inches by 5 5/8 inches.

We will work on the covers first.

Cut your cardboard into two pieces measuring 4 3/8 inches by 5 5/8 inches.
Cut two pieces of your outside cover paper to 5 1/2 inches by 6 3/4 inches.
Cut two pieces of your inside cover paper to 4 1/8 inches by 5 3/8 inches.

Now you are ready to assemble it.
1) Place your cardboard in the center on the back of your outside cover paper. It doesn't have to be perfectly center, just get it pretty close and it will be fine.
2) Using the cardboard as your guide fold your sides up.

3) Then starting with one long side, apply a line of glue along the paper. Fold over and adhere.
4) Move to the other long side and do the same. For this side, you will want to pull a little to make sure the cover is smooth.
5) Next cut small triangles from the corners like in the photo.
6) Glue the last two sides using the same directions as before.
Now you are ready to adhere your inside cover paper.
7) Apply glue over the whole back side.
8) Smooth out the glue with an old key card. You just need enough glue to have a thin layer. Start with a little here and add more if you need it.
9) Adhere it to the center of the inside cover.
Let it dry while you move onto the next cover. It may sound like a lot, but it's really quick.

If you haven't already, cut your inside filler pages to 4 1/4 inches by 5 1/2 inches. My journal has about 30 pages in it.
The last part is to punch holes in the covers and pages. Using a sheet of filler paper, punch one hole in the center. Then punch two holes on both sides 2 inches out. Use this sheet as your guide to punch the holes in all other pieces.

Loop in the binder rings.

That's it! You are now ready to gift your new journal (or use it to keep track of all your gifting projects)!
I hope you enjoyed this project. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments section and I will answer them.
